BECOMING A CANDIDATE

APPLICATION FOR NOMINATION PAPERS

Candidates seeking information on running in City & County of Honolulu races may contact our office. Individuals interested in all other offices may obtain information from the State of Hawaii OFFICE OF ELECTIONS.

City & County of Honolulu offices up for election in 2024 are:

  • Mayor
  • Prosecuting Attorney
  • Councilmember
  • District I
  • District III
  • District V
  • District VII
  • District IX

Applications are accepted by appointment only, at Honolulu Hale, 530 South King Street, Room 100, Honolulu, HI 96813. Contact the Office of the City Clerk at (808) 768-3800 to schedule an appointment between Monday to Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Office of the City Clerk does not accept filings for Federal and State contests.

FILING FEES (CITY CONTESTS)

Mayor – $500 (Discounted fee $50 with Affidavit to Voluntarily Agree with Campaign Expenditure Limits)

Councilmember/Prosecutor – $250 (Discounted fee $25 with Affidavit to Voluntarily Agree with Campaign Expenditure Limits)

CAMPAIGN SIGN REGULATIONS IN HAWAII

The City Department of Planning and Permitting has issued the following regulations for political-related signs. DPP Regulations for Political-Related Signs

NON-ELECTIONEERING GUIDELINES

On election days, campaign signs and electioneering activities are regulated by Hawaii Revised Statute § 11-132 . A 200 foot buffer area from the perimeter of any voter service center, place of deposit, and its  appurtenances must be free of campaign activity.
Persons wearing campaign clothing will be asked to cover the item of clothing while in the voter service center or leave the premises.

CANDIDATE FILING LIST (UNCERTIFIED)

The CANDIDATE REPORT, a list of candidates that have applied for nomination papers and/or filed for candidacy, will be available from the State of Hawaii Office of Election’s website.
