Safe Routes To School: For Parents

Parent Survey – take once per school year

Provide your thoughts on children walking and biking to school. The feedback will help the City determine areas for improvement to increase roadway safety. It will take 5 – 10 minutes to complete.

Walking School Bus & Bus Train

Students meet and walk or bike to school together as a group. It’s fun! If you live far from the school, get dropped off at the meeting location and join the group from there.

Contact your school’s parent organization to check if there are any existing meeting locations. If not, consider creating one! Learn how to create a Walking School Bus

Honolulu 311 App

Phone app available for Android and iPhone

The easiest way to report specific issues is by using the Honolulu 311 app. It is a real-time mobile civic engagement platform that is free, simple, and intuitive. It empowers people to report issues they come across within City jurisdiction. Use the app (recommended) on your smartphone (available for Apple or Android) or the desktop version. After you report the location and add a photo, the issue will be sent to the proper City branch who will respond to you within a few days. Learn more about the Honolulu 311 reporting system here.

Examples of things you may want to report:

  • walkway being blocked by abandoned vehicle, landscaping, etc;
  • missing curb ramp (as shown above);
  • missing sign;
  • sight distance blocked by parked vehicles or landscaping;
  • not enough time on the pedestrian signal “walk” phase to cross.

Call 911 to remove illegal parking

The Honolulu Police Department oversees enforcement of the law. Please call 911 non-emergency to remove illegal parking.

I want to beautify a route to school by picking up litter. How can I make it official?

To provide community service that is recognized by the City, you can join the Department of Facility Maintenance Mālama O Ka ‘Aina program. Contact Scott Goto at sgoto@honolulu.gov or 768-3606 to learn about the details.

Report Route and Mode Choice

Report which roads you take to get to school to focus efforts along the route. You likely take a different route depending on what mode of transportation you are using. Submit a form for every mode you use to travel to school. For example, if you walk some days and use a car on other days, complete the form twice, once for your route by foot and another for your route by car.
