Episode 58: Jon Nouchi on Road Safety and Courtesy on TheBus and Skyline

Roadway safety

On March 24, 2024, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving two bicyclists occurred in ‘Ewa. DTS Deputy Director Nouchi reminds the public to slow down and give yourself enough travel time. It is a simple ask with tremendous benefit.

“I think most of the crashes and most of the injuries happen, yes because of inattention, but also because we don’t give ourselves enough time,” said Deputy Director Nouchi. “We just set unrealistic expectations on how long it takes us to do things.”

This recent crash marked the 7th and 8th traffic fatality for O‘ahu this year

E-bikes

On March, 25, 2024, a 12-year old boy was sent to the hospital in serious condition after crashing into a parked car while riding on an e-bike. So what’s the law?

“By state law, you have to be at least 15 to operate an e-bike,” explained Nouchi on this week’s episode.

He goes on to talk about helmet laws, and addresses foot scooters, electric dirt bikes, and electric quads, and ways his department is looking to make using these devices safer for all roadway users.

Courtesy on TheBus and Skyline

With campaigns to get more residents to utilize public transportation, DTS Deputy Director Nouchi offers up some simple reminders.

“I think rules are good, but I think courtesy is even better,” says Nouchi.

Just a few of his courtesy tips and reminders:

  • elevator rules apply at the Skyline gates (let people off the train before rushing on to board)
  • don’t forget about the back door on TheBus (just like on an airplane, remember that the closest exit may be behind you)
  • get your HOLO card ready before you board TheBus
  • remove larger backpacks to avoid knocking into other riders when you swivel
  • be friendly to your TheBus operator! (they are working hard to get you where you need to be)
