Episode 75: Mark Yonamine on job opportunities with the City

This week, Mark Yonamine, Deputy Director for the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), joins host Brandi Higa on the One O‘ahu Podcast to discuss opportunities to join the City’s team of engineers and a few of the current construction projects around the island.

Join our City and County of Honolulu team

The City and County of Honolulu is looking for engineers and the Department of Human Resources has expedited its screening process to allow candidates to qualify to eligible lists within three days of application.

“We’re looking for all engineers,” said DDC Deputy Director Mark Yonamine. “All the different disciplines but also entry level, right out of college, and we do have managerial positions. So, you could be licensed with twenty years (of) experience and we still need that seniority.”

More good news in hiring: since March, the City and County of Honolulu has been allowing students who are within six months of graduation to conditionally qualify to our Engineer I lists. Hans L’Orange Comfort Station

Hans L’Orange Neighborhood Park is nearly ready to be reopened for public and permitted use! Parking capacity at the park has increased from 47 stalls to 122 stalls, which was made possible with the removal of the old basketball court and the conversion of an unpaved overflow parking area. Other enhancements to the park include new lights for the baseball field, a new irrigation system, and a complete renovation of the old bathroom.

“The old comfort station was out in the parking lot, kind of a ways from the field,” explained Deputy Director Yonamine. “So, if there were night games and you had to use the restroom, it was kind of a far walk plus it was dark, right? So, by moving the comfort station closer to the ball field, it’s a little safer environment.”

Improvements were also made to the electrical and drainage systems at Hans L’Orange Neighborhood Park.

Mānana Corporation Yard

Another DDC project approaching completions is one that will be able to house the Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM), Traffic and Electrical Maintenance Services at the Mānana Corporation Yard.

“That was a new warehouse, admin building, and parking structure,” said Yonamine. “That project was around $22 million. So, we’re just about completed and we’ll be turning that over to DFM.”

The new warehouse, administrative building, City vehicle and employee parking, and open storage, sits on the lower 2.8 acres of the City-owned site.
