Episode 67: Mayor Blangiardi on Tamayo Perry

This week, Mayor Rick Blangiardi joins host Brandi Higa on the One O‘ahu Podcast to discuss the recent loss of Tamayo Perry, a City lifeguard and Pro Surfer, who died in waters off the North Shore on Sunday. Plus, Mayor Blangiardi reflects on the 2024 Town Hall tour and FestPAC on O’ahu.

Remembering Tamayo Perry

Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguard Tamayo Perry, 49, was killed Sunday near Goat Island off O‘ahu’s North Shore.

“Tamayo was really well loved,” said Mayor Blangiardi. “Since his passing, I’ve heard so many wonderful stories about him and the respect people had for him.”

Perry, an eight-year veteran of Ocean Safety and well-known North Shore waterman, exemplified bravery, commitment and a deep sense of duty, serving our community with unwavering dedication.

2024 Town Hall Tour

Mayor Blangiardi’s 2024 Town Hall meetings wrapped up on Thursday, June 20, with a meeting at Waialua Elementary. The tour, which began on Thursday, March 21 in Kapolei, invited residents from various communities across the City and County of Honolulu to participate in a series of 11 town hall meetings, where they had the opportunity to interact directly with Mayor Blangiardi and key City officials.

“The community really cares deeply about where they live (in) each and every area,” added Mayor Blangiardi.

From a race track to a problematic property on Avocado Street, Mayor Blangiardi recaps, and provides an update, to some of the larger issues that have come up over the 11 meetings. For a look back at the meetings from 2024, please visit https://www8.honolulu.gov/mayor/townhall/

2024 Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC)

The Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture (FestPAC) is the world’s largest celebration of indigenous Pacific Islanders. This year, the 13th FestPAC convened on O‘ahu from June 6-16.

During the festival, Mayor Blangiardi signed a Sister City agreement with Avarua, Rarotonga, and the Cook Islands. This marked the City and County of Honolulu’s second Sister City agreement with an island country in Polynesia and the first agreement in partnership with Sister Cities International’s 7 for 70 Program, backed by the United States Department of State and the White House National Security Council.

“Ho‘oulu Lāhui: Regenerating Oceania” was the theme of FestPAC Hawaiʻi 2024, honoring the traditions that FestPAC exists to perpetuate with an eye toward the future.
