Episode 62: DPR on the Waipi’o Soccer Complex, Summer Fun, and Memorial Day

Waipi‘o Soccer Complex

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced that all facilities at the Waipi‘o Soccer Complex will be closed for about eight weeks for maintenance and renovation efforts.

“We met with the soccer organizations and we all agreed that for these last couple months it would be better just to completely close off usage of the fields to really give the grass time for it to grow to raise it to that higher caliber level,” said DPR Public Information Officer Nate Serota.

The work is expected to be finished in time for several popular soccer tournaments that are scheduled to begin in late June. Then, following this year’s closure, Serota describes the field mitigation plan moving forward to maintain the best playing conditions possible.

Memorial Day

For over seven decades the City has honored a solemn promise to adorn every grave at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Pūowaina with a fresh lei for the Mayor’s Memorial Day Ceremony. Now, DPR needs your help to commemorate their sacrifice by helping us make and gather 38,000 lei for every servicemember laid to rest at the cemetery. You are invited to donate lei (made of fresh flowers/ti leaf, measuring 20-22 inches untied, please tie), lei flowers (preferably plumeria or crown flower), or Anthurium bouquets.

If you can’t donate lei, consider donating your time. Click the link below for a list of the many lei-sewing and donation opportunities available for everyone on the days before this time-honored ceremony.
