Episode 57: Mayor Blangiardi on a new landfill site and road safety

Search for a new landfill site

This week, Mayor Rick Blangiardi joins host Brandi Higa on the One O‘ahu Podcast to discuss the start of his 2024 Town Hall Tour. It was at the first meeting in Kapolei, Mayor Blangiardi was asked to provide an update on the search for a new landfill site.

He responded to the topic of the Waipi‘o Soccer Complex emerging as an option for an O‘ahu landfill once the Waimanalo landfill near Ko Olina shuts down.

“The Navy is trying to help us but I would tell you as of this recording, I’m not so sure Waipi‘o would be a possibility for a lot of reasons,” explained Mayor Blangiardi.

Clean Water

Water safety was also a common theme at the first set of meetings with drinking water brought up in Kapolei and recreational bodies of water in Kailua.

“We’re working to control that and if nothing else, to eliminate it,” added Mayor Blangiardi.

The City notifies the public when higher than permitted levels of enterococcus are found in samples of effluent from the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Road Safety

On this episode, Mayor Blangiardi also talks about road safety in light of two bicyclists who were recently struck and killed by a vehicle along Fort Weaver Road. Police say speed appears to be a factor in the crash.

“People who get behind the wheel of a car… have to own that responsibility,” said Mayor Blangiardi. “You can’t get behind the wheel, and I’ve said it over and over again, impaired in any way.”

These are the seventh and eighth traffic fatalities on O‘ahu this year.
