Office of the Mayor

Episode 55: Mayor Blangiardi on bonuses for HPD recruits and the Dept. of Housing and Land Management

Bonuses for HPD recruits

Starting next month, with the 213th Recruit Class, the Honolulu Police Department will offer $25,000 in recruitment bonuses to the courageous men and women who join the department, stay on the force for three years, and help keep the people of our island safe.

“We realize it’s a tough decision,” said Mayor Blangiardi regarding the decision to join the Police Department. He went on to say, “I wanted to make sure our police department had every possible tool they could have in their recruiting efforts because that is what it is going to take to try to entice some young people to join our police department.”

This aggressive recruiting initiative was announced in this year’s State of the City Address, demonstrating the Blangiardi administration’s unwavering commitment to public safety and to our police department.

The new Department of Housing and Land Management

It was also in this year’s State of the City Address that Mayor Blangiardi announced the merging of our Office of Housing with our highly-talented real estate team, in the Department of Land Management.

“Creating this one department will only lend itself to cohesion and the synergy that we really need in order to effectively get things done,” said Mayor Blangiardi.

This new Department of Housing and Land Management will comprehensively set affordable housing policy, work to finance housing projects, coordinate planning, design and development of future housing units, and relentlessly push regulatory and process improvements.

Unfilled positions

Following the submission of his proposed budget for the 2025 fiscal year, which begins on July 1, Mayor Rick Blangiardi and members of his cabinet began the process of budget hearings in front of the Honolulu City Council. On the first day of these hearings, the topic of unfilled positions came up.

“We’re doing everything we can to not only express and demonstrate to our workforce that they value but we also want to really improve things so we can recruit really well,” added Mayor Blangiardi.
