Office of Housing

On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, the Office of Housing (HOU) and the Department of Land Management (DLM) hosted an informational session to engage City employees in key housing and redevelopment efforts shaping Honolulu’s future. Open to all active City employees, the session attracted over 100 participants, bringing together representatives from 21 departments and agencies for a collaborative discussion focused on affordable housing, transit-oriented development, and the City’s long-term planning initiatives.

A central focus of the session was the Iwilei Center redevelopment—an ambitious, mixed-use project adjacent to the Kūwili Skyline Station that will deliver hundreds of affordable homes alongside new retail, community, and government spaces. As the City advances this transformative project, it is actively seeking a development partner to help bring the vision to life. The presentation outlined the project’s goals, its anticipated impact on the surrounding community, and next steps in the selection process following the City’s release of a formal Request for Interest (RFI) on March 3, 2025.

The session featured a joint presentation by Kevin D. Auger, Executive Director of the Office of Housing, and Norman Wright, Senior Planning & Design Consultant with the Center for Creative Land Recycling (CCLR). Together, they offered insights into the redevelopment strategy and answered questions on how the project supports the City’s broader housing and TOD objectives.

Mahalo to Norman Wright, Ignacio Dayrit, and Devyn Rainwater from CCLR for sharing their expertise, and to all who participated in the session. The exchange of ideas underscored the importance of cross-departmental collaboration in creating housing solutions that serve our community today and into the future.
