B. 75th Anniversary of the Wahiawā War Memorial Swimming Pool:
August 31, 2024. 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Wahiawā Lions Club is hosting the 75th Anniversary of the Wahiawā War Memorial Swimming Pool at the Wahiawā District Park, the first public swimming pool built in the City & County of Honolulu. The pool was built in memory of those brave, young soldiers from Wahiawā who served in the 442nd and 100th Battalions, who lost their lives in the battle of World War II. This event is open to the public: Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Royal Hawaiian Band will be performing at this event.

Follow-Up Status of Game Room Criminal Activity and Fatality: Corner of Avocado Street and Walker Avenue on Thursday, May 16, 2024 – [0:13:45]: Kevin Auger shared that after the town hall meeting, Deputy Manager Director Krishna Jayaram and Chief of Staff Andy Sugg, along with officials from the Department of Permitting and Planning and the police department, engaged the Avocado Street property owner multiple times. They issued warnings, which led to the boarding up of the main building and ongoing construction on a smaller structure. Despite slower progress, periodic police patrols monitored the site. Concerns were raised about unauthorized construction, clarifying that only the smaller building had a permit. Efforts included a hollow tile wall to secure the property from Lake Wilson access, though coordination with neighboring property owners remained challenging.

United States Navy – [0:25:55]: James Newman addressed concerns about water safety related to the Red Hill. They reported that over 10,000 water samples had been taken and certified safe to drink by regulators such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Health. He emphasized a hotline (808-449-1979) for anyone with water concerns to request testing, which underwent rigorous regulatory scrutiny. Despite reports of sheens on the water, all tests conducted showed negative results. The Navy also mentioned an EPA-hosted webinar to be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 to provide detailed findings on their long-term water monitoring efforts at Red Hill.

Fundraiser for Backpacks – [0:48:26]: Lia Thorne from Aloha State Outreach announced that a fundraiser is aiming to collect 1,000 backpacks for children in the community. The event will take place at Kaʻala Elementary School on Saturday, July 27, 2024. Activities will include haircuts for children, a Keiki Kokua Closet, and outreach booths for public benefit sign-ups. The fundraiser will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the school parking lot, featuring food vendors, music, and hula performances. Lia invited support through donations or volunteer efforts via their website, alohastateoutreach.org.

Wahiawā Small Businesses – [0:51:30]: TJ Cuaresma announced that there has been a lot of businesses closing down, so she asked the community to support any small businesses in Wahiawā if possible.

Board of Water Supply (BWS) (CONTINUED) – [0:53:10]: Nicole responded to a question that was asked earlier in the meeting regarding to the ongoing project at Glen Avenue and Kilani Avenue. Nicole announced that the plates are still located at the main break because it is part of the main replacement for the water system improvements although the water main break has been fixed. If the community would like to know the duration of a specific area, they can contact Project Manager Sandy at (808) 748-5730.

State’s Agribusiness Development Corporation – [0:58:00]: Wendy introduced Roger as the new property manager. Gratitude was expressed to the community for helping reduce homelessness associated with Agriculture Development Corporation (ADC) land from 44 to about 7 individuals through partnerships. Updates included ongoing applications for farming on the land and progress towards finalizing a conservation easement for parcels six and eight by month’s end, aimed at fire mitigation. The community was encouraged to submit expressions of interest for land opportunities to guide future decisions.

Update on the 360 California Avenue Project – [1:17:30]: Planner with the Department of Community Services Mike Sakata along with representatives from Family Promise presented an update. The project began in early 2023 with the identification of $6 million in community development block grant funding. The department acquired the 360 California Avenue property and subsequently issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for special needs housing. Also, a video was shared announcing that their new facility at 360 California Avenue will house up to twelve families, providing essential services like secure parking, private rooms, and community-building activities. They collaborate with over 100 organizations to offer comprehensive support, including healthcare and educational workshops, ensuring families transition to stable housing swiftly and successfully.

Mayor Rick Blangiardi’s Representative – [1:45:23]: Kevin Auger explained that affordable housing is defined as housing where individuals or families do not pay more than 30% of their income. He also highlighted various initiatives in the Mayor’s newsletter, including the establishment of the Department of Ocean Safety and improvements to the City’s 911 system. Other topics covered included hurricane preparedness, the Hawaiian Electric Company’s public safety power shutoff program, and efforts by City employees to support the Hawaiʻi Food Bank. Kevin also mentioned an upcoming town hall meeting and updates on bike racks for buses and property violations at specific locations such as 123 Mango Street. He emphasized collaboration with various agencies to address community concerns effectively.

Councilmember Matt Weyer – [1:56:48]: Kelly Anaya reported that Councilmember Weyer recently visited The Oʻahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), one of the few operational adoption and clinic centers on Oahu to express appreciation for its vital role in the Wahiawā community. He has also allocated funding legislatively for the replacement of the local pool, hoping for swift resolution of this long-standing issue. Councilmember Weyer’s office remains actively engaged with issues concerning the Achieve Zero properties on Mango Street and Avocado Street, advocating for prompt action and resolving community concerns.

Senator Donovan Dela Cruz – [2:04:50]: David Cho reported the recent passage of House Bill 2404 marks a significant tax relief measure signed into law by the Governor, aimed at increasing standard deductions by 2031. This change will notably reduce tax burdens for families as incomes rise. In addition, ongoing projects include collaborations on the Civic Center and school initiatives, such as Leilehua High School’s new admin building and upgrades to Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

Army invites comments on Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Proposed Land Retention at Kahuku Training Area, Poamoho Training Area, and Makua in Military Reservation Hawai’i: The U.S. Army prepared a Draft EIS regarding its proposed retention of up to approximately 6,322 acres of state-owned lands. This land retention would support continued military training at Kahuku Training Area (KTA), Kawailoa-Poamoho Training Area (Poamoho), and Makua Military Reservation (MMR) on the island of O’ahu.
Native Hawaiian organizations, federal, state, and local agencies/officials, and other interested organizations and individuals are encouraged to review the Draft EIS and provide comments during the 60-day public comment period, which runs from Friday, June 7, 2024 through Wednesday, August 7, 2024. The draft EIS can be viewed online at: https://home.army.mil/hawaii/index.php/OahuEIS/project-home
