Guests: Major Paul Okamoto, Captain Henry Roberts (Honolulu Police Department); Fire Fighter III Daryl Mau (Honolulu Fire Department); Tom Heinrich (Representative Belatti); Nestor Garcia (Congressman Case);
Chassity Santiago (Councilmember Say); Karen Awana, Eddie Hinojosa, Isabel Hinojosa (Residents/Guests).
1. Call to Order at 2:02 p.m.
2. Approval of Monday, July 29, 2024 Meeting Minutes: Approved as written.
3. Committee Concerns from Previous Meeting
A. 1454 Kinau Street Update: Nina Bourke sends her appreciation from the residents in their neighborhood due to the improvements in removing homeless encampment and drug activity. Major Okamoto shared HPD’s ongoing efforts, as well as monitoring the illegal gambling rooms 8n the area. Chair Nakamoto shared his meeting with City (Sam Moku) and State (John Mizuno, Brandon Mitsuda) to develop long-term strategy to address the homeless camp movements and to provide assistance as needed for shelter and medical attention, as well as drug activity.
B. 666 Prospect Street Update: Concerns of illegal dumping alongside the street, homeless encampment inside the Punchbowl Memorial Cemetery fencing, and potential fire hazards of dry brush. Nestor Garcia shared his ongoing communication with the Punchbowl Cemetery group, as well as action on homeless encampment near the Stevenson Middle School area in working with HPD. Major Okamoto shared his awareness and monitoring in that Papakolea area. Harris shared his communication with US Army Garrison Hawaii staff, Michael Donnelly. Next steps will be for the agencies of the City, State, and Federal with elected officials to meet to discuss a strategy to address the issues connected with the Punchbowl perimeter. Tentative online Zoom meeting scheduled for Monday, September 16, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
