HONOLULU – As the holiday season wraps up, the Department of Environmental Services (ENV) reminds O‘ahu residents to recycle their live Christmas trees through the city’s convenient disposal programs.
O‘ahu’s automated curbside green waste collection program serves more than 160,000 households. Residents with green carts should prepare their trees by removing all decorations, cutting the tree into pieces to fit completely inside the cart, and ensuring the lid closes. Trees with tinsel or flocking must be cut, bagged, and placed in the gray cart.
For homes with manual curbside collection, trees should be cut into three-foot sections, bundled securely, and placed at the curb on the regular refuse collection day. Residents may also drop off whole trees at any ENV Convenience Center (excluding Wahiawā) or the Kapaa Transfer Station in Kailua. Live trees without flocking or tinsel may also be dropped off for free at the city’s composting contractor, Hawaiian Earth Recycling in Wahiawā (65-1101 Wilikina Drive). Visit the ENV website for more information, including live camera feeds of the convenience centers.
Condominiums and commercial properties may take advantage of waived tip fees for direct deliveries of large quantities of Christmas trees to the composting facility during the holiday season. To arrange for bulk tree deliveries, please contact ENV’s Refuse Division at 768-3200 (Option 7).
Let’s work together to recycle responsibly and keep our island clean and green this holiday season!
