HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) will conduct smoke testing of a portion of the wastewater collection system in the ‘Ālewa Heights area from Feb. 24 to March 14, 2025, weather permitting.
Testing will occur between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. as part of ENV’s preventative maintenance program to reduce rainwater inflow and infiltration into the sewer system.
During the testing process, ENV crews will pump non-toxic smoke into the sewer pipes to identify and record locations where the smoke escapes. This smoke is harmless, has minimal odor, and poses no fire or health hazard to humans or pets.
The test smoke should not enter your home unless there are plumbing defects or dried-up drain traps. Residents are advised to pour water into seldom-used drains before Feb. 24, 2025, to fill and create a water seal in the U-trap.
In the rare event smoke appears inside a residence during testing, residents should open all windows to ventilate the area and notify an onsite ENV crew member. As a precaution, individuals and pets with chronic respiratory conditions should temporarily relocate to another area during testing hours.
A map showing the testing area is attached to this notice. For more information, please contact ENV’s Collection Systems Maintenance Division at (808) 768-7272 or visit the ENV website for details about smoke testing.
