HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) responded yesterday to two sanitary sewer overflows caused by heavy rains.
The first location was at intersection of 8th Ave. and Hinahina St. ENV crews received the call at 6:04 p.m., arrived at the location at 6:30 p.m., and stopped the spill at 6:45 p.m. Heavy rains caused a manhole to surcharge and send 2,050 gallons of untreated wastewater into a nearby storm drain.
The second spill occurred at the intersection of Lowrey Rd. and Kaaipu Ave. ENV crews received the call at 7:06 p.m., arrived at the location at 7:35 p.m., and stopped the spill at 7:45 p.m. Heavy rains caused a manhole to surcharge and spill 1,950 gallons. Approximately 1,450 gallons entered a storm drain. Crews were able to recover 500 gallons.
ENV notified the state of Hawai‘i Department of Health who waived sampling but warning signs will be posted in the affected areas. Crews finished cleaning, disinfecting, and deodorizing the areas last night.
