Effluent at Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in compliance
HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services provides the following update regarding the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP):
Test results of effluent samples taken May 20, 2024, May 21, 2024 and May 22, 2024 have shown the enterococcus bacteria count in the WWTP treated effluent is within National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit limits for the Kailua Regional WWTP, and the May 17 to May 19 exceedance is not continuing.
Test results from samples at the seven (7) shoreline stations taken May 21 and May 22 show bacteria levels do not exceed state water quality criteria.
The state Department of Health (DOH) issued a brown water advisory for Kailua Bay May 22 as a result of storm runoff, which remains in effect. Per DOH’s brown water advisory, the public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff.
