HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) is excited to announce that Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi has signed a proclamation designating Tuesday, February 4, 2025, as Transit Equity Day across O‘ahu.
Transit Equity Day occurs every February 4 nationwide to honor the birthday of Rosa Parks, a civil rights activist known for her role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Parks has been recognized by the United States Congress as “the first lady of civil rights,” and “the mother of the freedom movement.”
Skyline, TheBus and TheHandi-Van are accessible and inclusive modes of public transportation in Honolulu, offering sustainable mobility options for Oʻahu’ s residents of all races and socioeconomic groups, from keiki to kūpuna, to reach jobs, education, healthcare, and other essential services.
Expanded public transportation options create safer streets by reducing the number of cars and fossil fuel dependencies, which contribute to climate change, minimizing transportation’s environmental impact. Investments in transportation are also proven to encourage economic growth by bringing business opportunities to equitable transit-oriented communities.
“Seamless and connected transit mobility uplifts everyone in our island community,” said DTS Deputy Director Jon Nouchi. “Vibrant, resilient cities depend on transit as a basic need. Skyline’s planned second opening, anticipated by the end of this year, marks a significant milestone in our transit evolution. Partnered with increased TheBus routes and quality TheHandi-Van services, equitable multimodal transportation supports a bright future for Oʻahu’s residents and visitors alike.”
