Senior Clubs & Kūpuna Events!

From keiki (children) to kūpuna (elders), the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation aims to keep our island community engaged in physical, social, and recreational activities throughout every phase of life! Below you will find many of our programs specifically oriented for our elderly population. This includes our Senior Clubs, seasonal classes, Special Kūpuna Events, , and  “Kūpuna in the Park” online tutorials.

Why are elderly activities so important? Joining senior citizen clubs offers a wealth of benefits for older adults, fostering both physical and mental well-being. These clubs provide a sense of community and belonging, helping to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation that some seniors may experience. Engaging in social activities, whether through exercise classes, group outings, or hobby groups, helps to keep the mind sharp and the body active. Additionally, senior citizen clubs often offer valuable resources, such as health screenings, educational workshops, and volunteer opportunities, empowering older adults to stay informed and engaged. Overall, participation in these clubs can significantly enhance quality of life, promoting both social connection and personal fulfillment. Special Kūpuna Events

Senior Valentines Dance (February)

Held at the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall, this annual event celebrates our love for kūpuna as they dance to a variety of music! Launched in 1969,  senior clubs and senior organizations select representatives to join some other VIPs during the opening ceremony. The Mayor and celebrities participate in folk and line dancing to fill up the morning program, which launches with the Royal Hawaiian Band!  It’s an amazing time, open to dancers of all ages (though the kūpuna are the stars!) Even when we couldn’t dance in person, our staff organized a virtual Valentine Program. Watch these amazing videos below.

Senior Classic Games (March)

Staying active, both physically and mentally, is one of the core missions of our Senior Clubs, which includes events this annual event normally held at Hālawa District Park! This fun-filled day includes members of clubs from around Oʻahu enjoying games such as: lawn pin ball, tunnel vision, peg ball, and nine gates

Senior Fun Walk (September)

During the Fun Walk, participants can enjoy a leisurely stroll around the shopping center punctuated by a mind-stimulating scavenger hunt. After activating your mind and body, participants are invited to an informational fair with a variety of booths, before further enjoying the shopping center. Free registration for the event begins 10 a.m. at the downstairs lobby near the Longs Drugs, with the walk beginning a half hour later. DPR staff estimate the walk has been an annual part of our Senior Citizens events for over two decades, travelling around different locations including Ala Moana Regional Park, Kapi‘olani Park, Patsy T. Mink Central O‘ahu Regional Park, and Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park.

Mayor’s Craft & Country Fair (November)

This free annual event began in 1974 and is held at the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Senior Clubs sell a variety of goods: plants, handcrafted items, food, jam, jellies and “hardly” used items.  Senior information and a variety entertainment is provided, a canned goods donation is appreciated.  It’s a great place to get an early start on our holiday shopping, with proceeds benefiting the kūpuna clubs!

"Kūpuna in the Park" Online Classes

With the COVID-19 pandemic most profoundly impacting our Senior (Kupuna) population, “Kupuna in the Park” was our way of keeping those members of our ‘ohana (family) engaged and entertatined. Launched in November 2020, these classes are designed for the elderly but can be enjoyed by all age groups!
