Mahalo for your interest in volunteering to help improve our City parks! Volunteers are everyday citizens and clubs who want to give back to the community to clean our parks and public areas. The Department of Parks and Recreation welcomes the help of volunteers to compliment our maintenance staff and keep up with the demand for recreation areas. Many hands working together make for light work. E alu pū kākou!

You can contribute in a number of ways; one of the easiest ways is to pick-up litter at a City park when you have free time. There are plenty of other possibilities for volunteer opportunities, which you can find at https://www8.honolulu.gov/dpr/volunteer-give/

Depending on your level of commitment, you can either choose to conduct a Community Service Project or engage in a more formal Adopt-A-Park Agreement. A Community Service Project is a one-time cleanup or revitalization effort. You may certainly organize several Community Service Projects, but if you are committed to regular improvement efforts at a specific location then we recommend pursuing an Adopt-A-Park Agreement. Having an agreement helps to establish a more fundamental relationship and understanding with our park staff, so that you your work can be done more efficiently and with better coordination. It’s a win-win situation!

Mahalo again for researching and pursuing ways to improve our City parks. Together we can all help to mālama ‘āina (respect the land) and continue to keep O‘ahu beautiful!

Our department facilitates 30 senior clubs island-wide, representing about 1,500 senior citizens! They participate in weekly activities that include:  business meetings, speakers, community service, excursions, luncheons, etc. They elect their own officers and organize all of their planned activities.  Weekly meeting attendances vary upon the size of the club (membership ranges from 10 to 250).  The section also coordinates large island-wide activities serving all club members and other senior citizens in the City and County of Honolulu. We also offer a variety of activities geared towards our elderly population as part of our seasonal classes. More information and registration for these classes is done through our Parks and Recreation Online System available at: pros.hnl.info

Our spring program registration is typically held in early to mid-January.

The summer program registration is normally in mid to late-May.

Finally, fall program registration is usually held in mid to late-August.

The dedicated arborists within our Division of Urban Forestry oversee the planting, maintenance, and removal of trees along City streets and within City parks. Click on the “Requests” icon to make a new one, then select “Street Tree” for type of request. Within that form please include as much information as possible.

If you have questions about other tree-related concerns, please review our Contacts for Tree Concerns Guide to point you in the right direction.

We are proud to host the City’s largest keiki program every year from June through July called Summer Fun! This legacy program is a seasonal day camp where children and teens are engaged in learning experiences that help build on soft skills, promoting leadership and success in education throughout their lives. It began on Oʻahu in 1944 with 26 sites in response to a community need for positive keiki engagement during World War II, and was even offered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Summer Fun serves approximately 10,000 keiki and teens each summer at about 60 sites around the island. For more information, visit Summer Fun’s dedicated website: bit.ly/summerfunoahu

We are fortunate to have some amazing recreation staff teaching classes in some of our 402 park locations around O‘ahu. However, not all types of activities and classes can be taught by our staff. Many more classes and activities are taught by individuals who are not on the City and County of Honolulu payroll. These individuals are hired to teach various classes and activities on a fee-for-service basis. They are called Recreation Class Instructors, or DF-71 Instructors. These instructors are self-employed, independent contractors who are required by law to have a gross income tax license and are responsible for filing your own tax returns. Click here for more information about the DF71 Program or visit  bit.ly/ParkInstructors
