Repairs to the popular pool at the Coach Harry M. Mamizuka Swimming Complex in Mānoa Valley District Park are progressing, with the pool now scheduled to reopen by the beginning of Summer Fun 2025 in early June.
Initially, the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) anticipated the pool repairs to be finished, and the pool reopened to the public, by this spring. When the project began DPR was encouraged to utilize our in-house maintenance staff to conduct the repairs. However, as the initial renovations progressed, we realized the project was beyond our abilities to complete alone. At that point we began searching for contractors to assist with the urgent repairs, which delayed the efforts to resurface and repaint the pool’s surface.
Now the pool repairs are in full effect, with a $485,000 contract awarded to Peterson Construction. In addition to these contracted repairs, DPR is working with the Mamizuka ‘Ohana and community swim advocates to revitalize other pool amenities, including the starting blocks and bleachers.
The pool was initially closed in the beginning of September 2024 due to plaster chipping and loose tiles along the pool’s underwater surfaces. The poor state of these surfaces was discovered when park staff were treating the pool for algae buildup.
We appreciate the continued patience of the pool users and general public as this popular park facility is closed for repairs. Swimmers are encouraged to visit the pools at Pālolo Valley District Park, McCully District Park, and Kānewai Community Park in the meantime.
