O‘AHU – A phased effort to improve the recreation building and Shinyei Nakamine Gymnasium Complex at Wai‘anae District Park is beginning this week.

The project will first focus on the recreation building, with the replacement of the facility’s roof. Other improvements to these facilities as part of this project include: bathroom upgrades (such as improved ADA accessibility), LED lighting conversion, interior & exterior painting, and replacement of the flooring, ceiling tiles, window screens, damaged doors, and downspouts.

The $3,464,000 construction contract for the project was awarded to MJ Construction, Inc. The $317,592 consultant contract was awarded to WTN Architecture, Inc.

Work on the recreation building is expected to be finished in Fall 2025, and will be followed by improvements to the Shinyei Nakamine Gymnasium Complex. The facilities will be closed during their respective phases. This includes the recently renamed Fred ‘Pops” Fernandez Pereira, Sr. Wai‘anae District Park Boxing Gym. A ceremony officially marking this tribute is expected later in April.

Mahalo to the Leeward communities for their patience while these facilities are closed for renovation.
