Firearm ranges at Koko Head Shooting Complex closing weekdays December 9 – 20 for backstop renovations

O‘AHU – All public firearm ranges at the popular Koko Head Shooting Complex (KHSC) will be closed on weekdays, Monday, December 9 through Friday, December 20, 2024 while maintenance staff with the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) renovate the backstop berm for the metallic silhouette range.

The complex’s archery range will remain open during that time, with the entire complex open for use on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15. No work will be conducted on that weekend. Law enforcement use of the Hanauma Bay-side ranges within the complex will continue during the public closure. On-site lead monitoring will be conducted while DPR staff renovate the backstop, which includes installing new soil to the existing berm.

The backstop work is expected to be complete before Saturday, December 21, but will reopen sooner if the work is finished ahead of schedule. The metallic silhouette range is expected to reopen in January 2025 following additional maintenance from DPR staff and the Hawai‘i Metallic Silhouette Shooters Association which operates this specific range.

KHSC was initially closed in September 2022, and began reopening for public use in March & April 2024. Most recently, weekday shooting hours for the pistol and rifle ranges were restored in July 2024. During the closure, the City hired a national outdoor shooting range expert to refresh the operations of the range, train employees in best practices for lead awareness to protect their health, and completed a variety of range improvements.

Please visit the KHSC official website for additional information and updates about the complex and its operations: bit.ly/kokoheadrange
