Mahalo to A-1 A-Letricians Inc. for $20,000 gift of materials and labor to energize the lights
O‘AHU – Skaters in Mililani now get to enjoy their skate park into the twilight hours following the successful installation of lights, thanks in large part to a donation from local electricians. A $20,000 gift of materials and labor from A-1 A-Lectricians, Inc. sparked by community collaboration during one of Mayor Blangiardi’s 2024 Townhall Meetings, yielded the construction of eight 40-foot-tall lights at the Mililani District Park Skate Park.
Approved through City Council Resolution 24-200, and with assistance from staff in the City departments of Parks and Recreation, Facility Maintenance, Design and Construction, and Environmental Services, the completion of the project was celebrated today alongside members of the Mililani Neighborhood Board, Mayor Blangiardi, Councilmember Val Okimoto, local skaters, and staff from A-1 A-Lectricians, Inc.
“When we initiated our townhall meetings last year and this year, one of our primary objectives was to directly engage our diverse communities and empower them through information and collaboration,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “The installation of these skate park lights is a perfect example of that goal in action. A generous local business saw an opportunity to enhance their community, but it required the coordination and support of multiple City departments to make it happen. Thanks to the dedication of A-1 A-Lectricians, their incredible staff, the Mililani community, and our City teams, we turned this vision into reality. Mahalo to everyone involved for making this project such a success.”
“On behalf of my office and District 8, I would like to extend a heartfelt ‘mahalo’ to Ashley Ohia of A-1 A-Lectricians and her staff for their incredibly generous donation of eight 40-foot-tall lights at the Mililani District Park Skate Park,” said Councilmember Val Aquino Okimoto. “With the passing of City Council Resolution 24-200 and the collaborative efforts from Mayor Blangiardi, and all the staff at the Department of Parks and Recreation, Facility Maintenance, Design and Construction, and Environmental Service, the City and County of Honolulu was able to make full use of this generous donation. Private-public partnerships like this are a tremendous resource for the community, as philanthropic support like this often makes a lasting impact in the community. Previously, parents were using make-shift lighting or car headlights to light the park after dark. With these new lights our keiki will be safer, as they continue to skate into the evening, ensuring this project will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come. “
The 21.23-acre Mililani District Park was opened by the City in August 1975. It boasts a wide variety of recreational amenities in addition to the skate park, including: a gymnasium, recreation center, playground, ball fields, and tennis courts. This skate park is one of 15 skate parks and roller rinks around O‘ahu. At George F. Wright Wahiawā District Park, the Hoʻoulu Wahiawā group is partnering with the City on the development and proposed expansion of the skate park at this historic public location. As part of this process, the City is inviting the public to a third public meeting in the park’s Ho‘okipa Building on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 beginning at 6 p.m.
We appreciate the participation of community members who attended the previous two meetings, during which a list of proposed park improvements was drafted, including an expanded skate park in a new location within the park. During this third meeting, a tentative timeline of the feasible projects will be presented based on the previous two meetings.
Mahalo to the participants in these community efforts who shared their ideas and vision of how to improve George F. Wright Wahiawā District Park.
