Structural improvement project part of phased reroofing effort for Ted Morioka Gymnasium in Pālolo

Construction to close facility in Pālolo Valley District Park, expected to reopen by Summer Fun 2025

Palolo Valley District Park Gymnasium Reroofing Phase 1 January 2025

O‘AHU – A renovation project for structural improvements to the Ted Morioka Gymnasium at Pālolo Valley District Park is scheduled to begin next week as part of a phased reroofing effort.

This project represents the first of two-phases to reroof the park’s gymnasium and pool pump building, with this initial phase upgrading the gymnasium’s steel framing, gutters, and drainage. The gymnasium will be closed for the duration of the project, with adjacent field space and some public parking closed due to staging of construction equipment and access. Please avoid these areas, particularly during working hours, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (excluding holidays)

Construction work is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 13, 2025, and be complete prior to this year’s popular Summer Fun Program.

The $1,710,100 construction contract was awarded to Diede Construction, Inc., with the $553,061 design consultant contract awarded to RMA Architects, Inc.  The consultant contract applies to both phases of this effort.

Named after the late State Representative for Pālolo / St. Louis, the Ted Morioka Gymnasium contains indoor courts and a boxing ring. It accompanies a recreation building, pool, and several ball fields within the 11.39-acre Pālolo Valley District Park.  The park was opened by the City in February 1952, and last saw capital improvement renovations through a Community Development Block Grant project in 2021.

A WWII veteran and eight-term lawmaker with the State of Hawai‘i House of Representatives, Morioka engaged in several professional and civic duties in his 70-years, including working as: an assistant to the Hawaiian Telephone Company President, Treasurer & Director of the All Hawai‘i Investment Corp., Director of the State Chamber of Commerce, a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention, a member of numerous community organizations (such as the Pālolo Lions Club and Japan American Sports Foundation), and long-time Pālolo resident.
