APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Trades Apprentice I (BC-05)

$4,695 monthly; $56,340 yearly

Applications are available online only and can only be completed when recruitment for Trades Apprentice I is open.

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?

A City apprenticeship is a combination of paid on-the-job training and related classroom instruction under the supervision of a journey-level trade professional. Programs typically take 3 to 5 years to complete, depending on the trade. After successfully finishing the apprenticeship program, graduates become skilled trade workers.

  • At the time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States, or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Possession of an appropriate valid Hawai’i State driver’s license, as required. Some positions require a commercial driver’s license Class B prior to completion of the Trades Apprentice Program.
  • A written test will be administered as part of the application evaluation process. You must pass the written test to move forward in the process.

When needed, the City may offer apprenticeships for the following skilled trades:

    • Fleet Mechanic III
    • Line Electrician
    • Pipefitter
    • Plant Electrical/Electronic Equipment Operator
    • Traffic Signal Electrician

For details about each job-class listed above, refer to the program brochure or type a job title (i.e. Pipefitter, Trades Apprentice, etc.) into the class specifications search bar.

Visit our Permanent Jobs page and search for an open apprenticeship recruitment. If recruitment is open, “Trades Apprentice I” will be listed. All applications must be submitted online by the posted deadline.

If recruitment is closed, we recommend signing up for job alerts (also known as the Job Interest Card). See details below.

If the trades apprentice recruitment is closed, sign up for a Job Interest Card* to receive an email notification when the City opens “Trades Apprentice I” in the future. Make sure to select the “trades” category.

*The Job Interest Card is provided as a tool to help applicants in their job search. Applicants are responsible for checking the Permanent Jobs website for the Trades Apprentice I recruitment.
