HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Enterprise Services (DES) has completed renovations at the Tom Moffatt Waikīkī Shell, enhancing the venue’s functionality and audio experience. Improvements include a full electrical service upgrade and modifications to the former orchestra pit.

Managed by the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), the $585,000 project began on October 1, 2024, requiring a six-month closure. ECS Inc. designed the electrical upgrades, with Ridgeway Construction, Inc. replacing the outdated switchgear. The $380,000 electrical project was coordinated in with Hawaiian Electric Company’s replacement of an aging transformer with a more reliable pad-mount unit.

Additional capital improvements addressed drainage and premium seating near the stage. Designed by Pacific Architects, Inc. and constructed by Molina Engineering, the $205,000 project also included a secured barrier for essential theater equipment. Both projects were completed on time, ensuring DES can continue to attract top-tier performers and productions.

“Listening to people reminisce about their favorite memories at the Tom Moffatt Waikīkī Shell—like watching a concert with a bright, full moon slowly rising above Diamond Head in the background, it reinforced our resolve to continue investing in the maintenance of such an iconic facility,” said Dita Holifield, Director of the Department of Enterprise Services. “We are extremely fortunate to have such a charming outdoor venue where we are able to host an array of live performances. With DDC Director Haku Milles’ staunch support and guidance, we remain committed to working on future facility upgrades to keep our doors open to the public, and to enhance the experience for our promoters, artists, and their audiences.”

Built in 1956, the Tom Moffatt Waikīkī Shell is a premier open-air entertainment venue hosting world-class concerts, cultural events, and community celebrations such as Lei Day and graduation ceremonies.

The re-opening kicks off with Kehlani’s Crash World Tour on March 26, followed by an unforgettable night under the stars with Boyz II Men on April 26.
