O‘AHU—The City and County of Honolulu is pleased to announce the reopening of the Sharks Cove parking lot at Pūpūkea Beach Park following the successful and ahead-of-scheduled completion of the emergency project to mitigate the distressed retaining wall in the area.

The project began on July 29, 2024, and was initially expected to be completed by November 25, 2024. However, thanks to the contractor’s prioritization and dedication, substantial work was completed significantly earlier, on August 27, 2024.

The project mainly involved rebuilding a deficient section of the dry-stacked rock wall by adding new rocks with mortar to create a stronger structure. This wall will support the park’s access road, which vehicles and pedestrians use to reach Sharks Cove. The area was also backfilled and compacted, including laying an aggregate base, paving with asphalt, and painting parking lines. These measures are expected to enhance the area’s stability and durability and protect against future erosion.

After sufficient time for the asphalt pavement to cure, the park’s access road and the Waimea Bay-side parking lot were reopened for public use on the afternoon of August 26, 2024, following a final inspection. The Kahuku-side parking lot remains closed pending striping, which is expected to be completed later this week, weather permitting.

The City and County of Honolulu thank the community for its patience and cooperation during this important project, which ensures the safety and accessibility of Pūpūkea Beach Park for all visitors.
