HONOLULU—The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announces a significant mechanical upgrade at the Frank F. Fasi Municipal Building. The project will involve installing new, energy-efficient air handlers to enhance air quality and improve the overall indoor environment for building occupants. The DDC advises the public of potential disruptions during the upgrade process.
The air conditioning air handlers on the 16th floor of the Fasi Municipal Building will be replaced with new, energy-efficient models. The installation will improve HVAC performance, provide better temperature and humidity control, and improve indoor comfort. The enhanced airflow and filtration systems will also contribute to better air quality.
The upgraded air handlers are designed to support the City’s climate goals by reducing energy consumption and electricity costs. In addition to energy savings, the new system will significantly improve air quality for building occupants, enhancing overall comfort and environmental health. It will be installed on the 16th floor of the building.
The largest crane in the State of Hawai‘i will be used to transport heavy mechanical equipment for the air handler installation to and from the 16th-floor mechanical penthouse, with operations taking place along South King Street. To minimize public disruption and avoid conflicts with the upcoming Children and Youth Day event at the Civic Center Grounds on Sunday, October 6, the crane setup will commence on the night of Wednesday, October 2. The work is scheduled to start on October 5 and is expected to be completed by November 8, 2024.
To ensure public safety, intermittent lane closures will be in effect, primarily during off-peak hours—late evenings, nights, and early mornings. These closures are necessary to facilitate safe crane operations and minimize disruption to daily traffic. The public is advised to follow all traffic control signs and cooperate with traffic control personnel. If there are any questions, please contact the DDC at (808) 768-8400.
The crane has a reach of 460 feet
