Emergency repairs beginning for Sharks Cove retaining wall

$1.25 million project is estimated to take approximately three months to complete

O‘AHU – A project to conduct emergency repairs to the retaining wall near Sharks Cove (Kapo‘o) at Pūpūkea Beach Park is scheduled to begin next week, July 29, 2024.

The retaining wall between the parking lot and rocky coastline at this frequented North Shore destination is significantly compromised; showing signs of deterioration which require emergency repairs to ensure public safety and the shoreline’s integrity.

The popular snorkeling and ocean access location will remain open to the public during the project, however, construction will require the closure of the parking lot. Pedestrian access on the mauka side of the site will be allowed. The City is working on making some parking available during construction, but the parking lot will remain closed at this time.

The park’s two comfort stations (bathroom buildings) and showers are expected to continue their regular operations.

The project is expected to be complete in three months, barring any weather and other unforeseen circumstances. The $1.25 million contract for the emergency repairs was awarded to Kaikor Construction Company Inc.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community, park visitors, and volunteers who oversee this important area while this work is being conducted.

If there are any questions, please contact the DDC at (808) 768-8400.
