DTS encourages visitors to avoid Lanikai during rock slide mitigation efforts

KAILUA – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) asks visitors of Lanikai to avoid and minimize travel to Lanikai due to the upcoming rock slide mitigation construction happening on Mokulua Drive. The project, announced yesterday by the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), will begin Monday, April 1, 2024 and will last approximately one month, weather permitting. Work will be conducted on weekdays, from the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays.

Parking restrictions will be in place from the start of construction through completion of the project, including holiday weekends, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in an effort to reduce traffic congestion for residents along the Lanikai-Kaʻōhao shoreline. Parking in Makaliʻi Place, the road closest to Kailua Beach Park, will also be restricted.

Visitors may consider other beaches along Oʻahu’s east shore or choose to ride TheBus Route 671 from Kailua Town for convenient alternative access to Lanikai.

Temporary “sawhorse” type signs will be in place on affected streets in Kailua and Lanikai to warn drivers of the parking restrictions.

DTS and the contractors for the ongoing Kalapawai Roundabout Project will be working closely with DDC to coordinate between work schedules, to minimize traffic impacts where possible. The mauka-bound lane of Kailua Road will remain closed between Kalaheo Avenue and Aumoe Street.
