HONOLULU – Drivers are being urged to avoid Kapiʻolani Boulevard near the Hawaiʻi Convention Center next week due to lane closures required for necessary gas line relocation and road paving work being conducted by the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC), in coordination with Hawaiʻi Gas.
The temporary lane closures are expected to have a significant impact on traffic flow in the area, and drivers are strongly advised to use alternate routes. If travel along Kapiʻolani Boulevard is necessary, motorists should proceed with caution and expect lengthy delays in areas near and around work zones.
Starting Monday, March 24, the eastbound right and middle lanes of Kapiʻolani Boulevard, from Atkinson Drive to Hauʻoli Street, will be closed for approximately three weeks, with a work schedule of Monday – Friday, from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (excluding holidays). This closure will allow Hawaiʻi Gas to relocate a gas line ahead of DDC’s upcoming paving project.
Westbound lane closures will also occur between McCully Street and Kalākaua Avenue to facilitate concrete jacketing of a shallow drain line. The right and middle lanes in this section will be closed from March 24-28 with a work schedule of Monday – Friday, from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (excluding holidays).
Additionally, beginning Tuesday, March 25, the westbound right lane of Kapiʻolani Boulevard, from Hauʻoli Street to Kalākaua Avenue, will be closed 24/7 through Friday, March 28. This continuous closure is necessary to allow the new concrete pavement to properly cure.
Paving activities in the eastbound lanes from Hauʻoli Street to University Avenue are expected to be completed within the next two weeks, weather permitting. Meanwhile, paving work between McCully Street and Atkinson Drive will continue in both directions through May. Motorists are advised to expect delays, use alternate routes when possible, and exercise caution when traveling through the area.
The City thanks the public for their patience and cooperation. The City will continue to provide updates throughout the project. If there are any questions, please contact the Department of Design and Construction at (808) 768-8400.
