City to begin rehabilitation of Hale‘iwa’s “Rainbow” Bridge
HALE‘IWA – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Design and Construction is advising the public of upcoming rehabilitation work on the Kamehameha Highway Bridge No. 603, also known as the Rainbow Bridge over Anahulu Stream in Hale‘iwa.
Work includes concrete delamination and crack repairs, installation of cathodic protection anodes, and painting. The intent of the project is to protect the bridge from corrosion and improve its structural integrity, thereby enhancing the longevity of the bridge and public safety.
Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, April 29, 2024, and is expected to continue for approximately one year, barring unforeseen conditions and weather events. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays. During construction the bridge will remain open to vehicular traffic and one sidewalk will be closed at a time while the other sidewalk remains open to pedestrians. A temporary lane closure might be implemented, but only if determined necessary. Motorists and pedestrians should allow extra time while navigating through the area and observe all posted signs, traffic controls, and Special Duty Officers.
Recreational use of the waterway by the general public will be maintained along approximately half of the bridge span between the Kahuku abutment and center pier or the Waialua abutment and center pier during the construction period.
The City appreciates the patience of the community during this process. Questions and comments may be directed to the City and County of Honolulu, Department of Design and Construction, at (808) 768-8400.
