Ahihi Street footbridge

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC) has closed Bridge 158 in Kalihi, also known as the Ahihi Street footbridge, indefinitely due to significant damage to its metal railings.

Built in 1975, the footbridge is located on Ahihi Street between Kamanaiki Street to the north and Nihi Street to the south. The closure will remain in effect until further notice. The Department of Facility Maintenance has installed signage and barricades to restrict access.

The City urges the public to avoid the bridge entirely, as it is now closed to all pedestrians and bicyclists. Entering the stream embankment to cross Kamanaiki Stream or loitering on the footbridge is strictly prohibited.

A recent inspection found severe corrosion throughout the bridge railings, affecting both the upstream and downstream sides. Corrosion has also caused the failure of all transverse metal supports beneath the footbridge deck. Additionally, at the Nihi Street end of the bridge, the upstream railing anchor supports have failed, creating a hazardous one-foot gap between the deck and railing. Due to these safety concerns, immediate closure is necessary to protect public safety.

For students and parents of Kalihi Uka Elementary School, please plan an alternate route for commuting to and from school. Crossing the stream embankment is unsafe and strictly prohibited.

The City reminds all pedestrians to follow traffic laws, obey all posted signs and signals, and travel with caution and aloha.
