Self-service kiosks meeting record demand for renewing vehicle registrations
HONOLULU – The more than 156,000 Oʻahu motorists who renewed their vehicle registrations at self-service kiosks in 2023 were the most ever at these bright yellow touch-screen terminals in the City and County of Honolulu.
The record-breaking year for these terminals, which operate much like ATMs inside select Safeway and Foodland stores, comes as they remain the fastest way to renew a motor vehicle registration on Oʻahu, where the unattended retail technology enables residents to quickly renew vehicle registrations on their own time remote from satellite city halls.
“The growing use of these self-service kiosks continues to complement our broader efforts to widely turn renewing a motor vehicle registration into a convenient part of a trip to the supermarket,” said Kim Hashiro, director of the city’s Department of Customer Services.
The record number of registration renewals at self-service kiosks last year represents a 36 percent increase from the previous year at these terminals, which are accessible at select supermarkets that are open late, if not 24/7, and accept renewals up to 10 months past the expiration date with a $16 late fee.
The self-service kiosks are deployed inside Safeway stores at seven locations: the Salt Lake Shopping Center; the Kāne‘ohe Bay Shopping Center; Kapolei Shopping Center; Waimalu Shopping Plaza; Kapahulu Shopping Center; as well as Hawai‘i Kai and South Beretania Street. Rounding out the locations where the self-service kiosks are located on O‘ahu is the Foodland supermarket at the Waipi‘o Shopping Center.
