HONOLULU – Mayor Blangiardi has directed Honolulu Hale be lit in the colors orange, blue and white to commemorate National EMS Week. The Hale will be lit in the colors of City ambulances from sundown on Sunday, May 19, 2024 to sunrise on Saturday, May 25, 2024. A number of events will commemorate EMS Week in Honolulu including a promotional ceremony and a civilian responder recognition.

This year’s National EMS Week theme is “Honoring Our Past, Forging Our Future.” This year marks the 50th National EMS Week and reminds us of the proud history and contributions of EMS practitioners over the decades.

“This week, across the country, we take pause to truly reflect on the incredible, life-saving work our Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians do, day in and day out. Every day they come to work they provide our community with the highest level of pre-hospital emergency medicine,” said Director of the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Jim Ireland.

The City’s EMS professionals are responsible for administering emergency medical treatment to one million residents and millions of visitors annually. In 2023, Honolulu EMS answered more than 106,000 911 calls, delivering advanced life-saving medical treatment to more than 89,000 and transporting nearly 63,000 patients to emergency rooms.

About National EMS Week:

In 1974 President Gerald Ford established the first “National Emergency Medical Services Week” with the intent to recognize the invaluable work of EMS practitioners and raise public awareness about EMS. It is celebrated during the third week of May, with various events and activities that honor the achievements of EMS Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), highlight the importance of EMS in the overall healthcare system, and increase awareness of the challenges and issues faced by the EMS daily.
