Effluent at Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in compliance

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services provides the following update regarding the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP):

Test results of an effluent sample taken May 15, 2024 and May 16, 2024 have shown the enterococcus bacteria count in the WWTP treated effluent is well within permit limits, and the May 14, 2024, exceedance is not continuing. Additionally, test results from offshore stations near the discharge of the deep ocean outfall taken May 15, 2024 show bacteria levels do not exceed state water quality criteria.

The WWTP continues to manage even higher flows as a result of sequential storm events with extremely heavy rainfall, including using the Kaneohe-Kailua underground sewer tunnel to regulate flow into the WWTP, and the City will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The state Department of Health (DOH) issued a brown water advisory for the island of O‘ahu on May 16 as a result of the heavy rain, which remains in effect. Per DOH’s brown water advisory, the public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff.
