City’s DMV warns public about scam targeting road tolls

HONOLULU – The Division of Motor Vehicles in the City and County of Honolulu is alerting the public to a new scam attempt delivered via text message.

The message states that phone users have an unpaid toll bill on their account and demands payment that requires a response to the text message. The text message is fraudulentas the City and County of Honolulu has no toll roads and the DMV does not collect toll fees.

An example of the scam text people may receive reads as follows:

  • “Pay your FastTrak Lane tolls by February 13, 2025. To avoid a fine and keep your license, you can pay at <SCAM URL>. (Please reply Y, then exit the text message and open it again to activate the link, or copy the link into your Safari browser and open it).”

Users are encouraged to block the sender immediately and delete the message without responding to it.
