City extends feral chicken removal service to private-property owners

Feral Chicken Cage Disposal Service

HONOLULU – Private-property owners on Oʻahu stand to benefit from a new cage and disposal service aimed at helping them tackle the nagging issue of feral chickens.

The City and County of Honolulu has contracted with Sandwich Isle Pest Solutions to now offer the service to private-property owners at a reduced cost.

The cage and disposal service is open to property owners of all types, and requires them to work directly with the city’s pest-control vendor by calling (808) 456-7716, or making an online request for service at www.sandwichisle.com.

“The cage and disposal service for private-property owners is our latest effort to identify and support comprehensive solutions to helping control the feral chicken population on Oʻahu,” said Kim Hashiro, director of the city’s Department of Customer Services.

In the past, the city’s pest-control vendor only removed feral chickens from city-owned properties such as parks and municipal golf courses.

The new cage and disposal service is in direct response to complaints from private-property owners about feral chickens crowing all hours, creating noise nuisances, posing health concerns with their waste, damaging landscape with their foraging, and agitating pets with their mere presence on Oʻahu, where the city has been setting up traps on public property, discouraging residents from feeding them at public parks, and connecting residents to resources for assistance.
