Note: This is a Full-Time Temporary Contract Position with a specific project duration. The length of employment may vary depending on project needs and funding availability.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Park Ranger I position was created for the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Park Ranger Assessment Project. Under the supervision of the Park Ranger II, the Park Ranger I is primarily responsible for gathering information on various unauthorized commercial activities and educates patrons on rules and regulations to help promote security and safety in the parks.

This position does not possess any enforcement authority and is largely focused on information gathering and research which serves to gather information essential for the development of a complete park ranger program.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct data collection activities in City parks, following assigned routes and schedules to gather necessary information.
  • Collect specific data points using electronic devices or paper forms.
  • Ensure accurate and consistent data collection by following established protocols and guidelines.
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail in recording collected data.
  • Ensure accurate completion of all required forms and documentation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues or challenges encountered during data collection.
  • Explain the purpose of the data collection and answer any questions from community members.
  • Travel to designated locations within the assigned region to conduct data collection.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet project goals, objectives, and deadlines.
  • Adhere to all relevant privacy, safety, departmental, and general City guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years’ experience handling public interactions OR experience as a park ranger, law enforcement, or equivalent experience.
  • Possession of a current and valid Hawai’i State driver’s license (type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Comfortable approaching and engaging with individuals in public settings.
  • Ability to effectively interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently as necessary.
  • Flexibility to work in various locations and adapt to changing schedules.
  • Physical stamina to spend extended periods walking or standing outdoors.
  • Basic computer literacy and proficiency in using data collection tools.
